HUMAN-NATURE
Nothing draws me or engages me more aesthetically than nature. In nature, I readily access and experience a sublime force which penetrates all of being. The faces I make refer to the human consciousness within the world. They are images of the universe in humanity and humanity in the universe. They are our oneness; the realization of our inseparability.
Human bodies, at every scale, embody the same rhythmic harmony and proportions that galaxies and flowers contain. I cannot be separated from the matrix from which I emerge. This is why this series depicts humans arising from nature.
I am interested in the role human consciousness plays in this world. This world experiences itself through me. Current theoretical physics, as well as traditional wisdom from around the world maintain that a perceiving mind has a direct and creative role in the coming into being of the world.
Finding and digging my own clay teaches me a great deal about the places I work. I research and come to understand places in terms of ancient oceans and ice ages. I learn how rivers move across valleys over time, leaving deposits of sand, silt and clay. I forge a bond between a scientific understanding of a place and a spiritual one, which embraces its grace, beauty, and sanity.
When the work is done, it is photographed. It is then left to begin melding back into the surroundings from which it was created.
