New Consciousness
This project was completed for Sound Transit's temporary art installations on Broadway, in Seattle, WA. It was my contribution to ST's innovative art-based solution to an urban development problem.
On Friday, October 10, 2008, two community volunteers and I cleaned litter from Broadway, Pike and Pine streets in Seattle for two hours. I took the trash back to my studio and created this piece, which visually represents what I believe to be occurring in the world today. There is emerging in human beings an awareness of a profound spiritual dimension in life; a dimension that transcends personal, ethnic, cultural and political differences and unites humanity. The human figure is passing through the birth canal into a higher realm of consciousness. Similarly, the garbage used to make the piece has been elevated to a new level.
